What Abhishek Kumar said
How did UPS and NPS differ when central government employees had to choose?
When the choice was due in 2025, the two schemes were built very differently. Under UPS, the government contributed 10% of salary and put in a further 8.5% towards the pension pool, and the pension was set at half of the final basic pay, with dearness allowance increases added to it. Under NPS, the government contribution was higher at 14%, but the final benefit depended on the markets and on the annuity bought.
What risk did UPS carry for employees who might leave service early?
I pointed out that UPS came with risks of its own. If an employee left government service early, their pension under UPS could start later or be cut, so the fixed payout came with conditions attached. Anyone who was not sure of staying in government service until retirement needed to factor this in carefully before picking UPS over NPS.
How should an employee have decided between UPS and NPS?
If stability and a fixed, predictable income mattered most to you, UPS was the path to take. If you were comfortable with market risk and preferred long-term flexibility, NPS could have suited you better. In the end it came down to how much certainty you wanted in retirement and how much market movement you were willing to live with.

The article covers the choice central government employees had to make by June 2025 between the National Pension System and the Unified Pension Scheme. It compares the contribution structure, the market-linked nature of NPS, the fixed pension under UPS, and the fact that the choice cannot be reversed.
