What Abhishek Kumar said
Why should you be wary of very large retirement corpus figures?
I would first ask who is quoting the number. The person warning you that you need a corpus as large as ₹40 crore is often also the one offering to sell you the plan meant to reach it. That does not make every large figure wrong, but it is a reason to check the assumptions behind it before acting on it.
Do household expenses really fall after retirement?
For many Indian households, spending falls by roughly 30 to 40 per cent after retirement. That is not because people cut back or compromise; their lives simply become less complicated once work ends. A corpus estimate that assumes today's spending carries on unchanged can therefore overstate what a family needs.
How is a ₹40 crore retirement figure worked out?
The arithmetic runs like this. Take monthly expenses of ₹2 lakh today; by age 60, inflation turns that into about ₹10 lakh a month. Apply the 4 per cent withdrawal rule, add a conservative margin for healthcare, lifestyle creep and a longer life, and you arrive at roughly ₹40 crore. So the figure follows from those particular inputs about spending and inflation.
How should you work out your own retirement corpus?
In my view, no one should get paralysed by a headline figure quoted for someone else. I would instead calculate the corpus you need from the expenses that will carry on once you have retired. That gives you a number tied to your own life and spending, which you can plan towards, rather than a target built on another person's assumptions.
In our words, from what he said in the piece. General information, not personal advice.

The article questions a widely shared claim that a metro professional may need ₹40 crore to retire. It sets out the assumptions behind the figure, how spending often falls after retirement, and assets such as provident fund, gratuity, NPS, PPF and a paid-off home, and urges readers to work out their own number.
