Abhishek Kumar on money management

The money habits I keep coming back to are simple, and I think that is the point. Before investing, build an emergency fund, buy term and health cover, and clear high-interest debt. After that, invest first, ideally automatically on payday, and spend what remains. A plain split such as 50-30-20 between needs, wants and savings is a reasonable place to begin.

Most of the money problems I am asked about have less to do with income than with behaviour. Lifestyle creep, small treats that quietly add up, buying a house or throwing a wedding because of what others will say, and the fear of missing out all pull people away from their goals. Patience and temperament count for more than cleverness in investing, and I steer people away from borrowing to invest or to speculate.

For investing, I prefer an asset allocation that fits your risk appetite, reviewed and rebalanced from time to time, over reacting to forecasts, elections or a single valuation measure. Gold earns a modest place as a hedge, while illiquid holdings such as art or diamonds are better treated as lifestyle purchases than as core investments.

When buying a home, judge affordability by take-home income rather than by loan eligibility, and see the home you live in as a lifestyle choice. Couples do well to talk openly about money and to keep some money in common and some of their own. And keep your affairs easy to find: an inventory of accounts and policies, nominations and a will.

Questions people ask

What should I sort out before I start investing?

Get the foundations in place. In general I suggest keeping six to twelve months of essential spending as an emergency fund somewhere easy to reach, and more if your income is irregular or you live in an expensive city. Buy term and health insurance early, and clear high-interest loans such as credit card dues. After that, set up automatic investing on payday and refine it later. When extra money arrives, such as a tax saving or a bonus, the same order applies: emergency fund first, then costly debt, then goals.

How should I budget my salary?

A 50-30-20 split, half for needs, 30 per cent for wants and 20 per cent for savings, is a sensible starting point, though in expensive cities housing alone can take a large share. More important than the split is the order: move your savings out first, the day the salary arrives, and give yourself a fixed budget for leisure. Track spending for a few months before setting rules, and watch for lifestyle creep, where expenses quietly rise with every raise.

Said in Mint, June 2026

How much gold should I hold?

I see gold as a hedge rather than an engine of growth. Its price can fall sharply and stay flat for long stretches, so I generally suggest a modest share, around 5 to 10 per cent of what you invest, held through gold ETFs or mutual funds unless you need the physical metal. Buy it for allocation, not because prices have risen; buying after prices hit a record brings timing risk. Silver is far more volatile, so treat it as a smaller addition, not a substitute.

How should couples manage money together?

Talk about it openly, ideally before marriage: incomes, loans and spending habits. Many couples do well with a hybrid set-up, a joint account for shared goals and separate accounts for personal spending, with an agreed limit for small purchases nobody has to explain. Some prefer to pool incomes, others agree on each partner's share; either can work if goals are agreed and you act as a team. Tension usually comes when one of you thinks the other saves too little or takes big spending decisions alone.

Said in Business Standard, February 2026

Should I buy a house or keep renting?

Buy for the right reasons and within your means. I usually treat the home you live in as a lifestyle decision more than an investment. Buying makes more sense when the EMI takes no more than roughly 30 to 35 per cent of your take-home income, judged on what you can afford, not on what the bank will lend. Count upkeep, taxes and possible rate rises, protect your emergency and retirement savings, and don't let social pressure decide the timing.

Said in India Today, May 2026

Should I wait for a market fall before I invest?

I would not build a plan around waiting. Nobody knows when a fall will come or how deep it will be, and money kept aside for a dip often sits idle for years while prices move on without it. I usually suggest a steady, automated SIP that goes out on payday, so the decision is made once and does not depend on mood or headlines. If a windfall arrives while the market happens to be in a genuine correction, putting part of it to work then can be a sensible side move, but it is an addition to the plan, not the plan itself.

Said in freefincal, July 2026

Is it ever a good idea to borrow money to invest?

In my experience, no. A loan carries a fixed cost that falls due whatever the market does, while the result of the investment is uncertain, so the odds are tilted against you from the start. I see this most often around IPOs, where people borrow to apply even though allotment is uncertain and the listing may disappoint, and the interest has to be paid either way. I also would not dip into an emergency fund for an application. If an opportunity only works with borrowed money, I take that as a reason to pass on it and keep investing from income instead.

Said in Business Standard, September 2026

If I lose my job, which savings should I draw on first?

I suggest working through the money in a set order, starting with what costs least to touch and is easiest to reach. Fixed deposits and the emergency fund come first, then debt funds, and only after that a partial withdrawal from EPF or PPF. Retirement money is the last resort, because it is the hardest to rebuild. While you are living off these savings it is reasonable to pause SIPs rather than feed them from a shrinking cushion, and once a new income starts, the first task is to refill the emergency fund before the SIPs resume.

How do I keep festival sales and online offers from wrecking my budget?

I start from the fact that these deals exist because the seller, the platform and the card issuer all gain from them; the shopper gains only when the purchase was already planned. So I suggest writing a list before the sale opens and buying only what is on it, at a price you have checked elsewhere. If you pay by card, keep the EMIs you carry within a small share of take-home pay. And if a card balance has already built up, I would clear it from liquid savings or a cheaper loan rather than let it roll over at card rates, and pay the full bill every month after that.

Said in Business Standard, October 2024

When should I make a will, and what else keeps my affairs in order?

Sooner than most people think. I suggest making a will once you own anything of significance or have someone who depends on you, not at some later age. Include your digital assets and name someone to handle them, and keep nominations on accounts and policies consistent with it. Then revisit it every three to five years, and sooner after a marriage, a birth, a property purchase or a death in the family. Alongside the will, I would keep one inventory of every account, policy and locker where your family can find it, because a trail that breaks at a life event is how money goes unclaimed.
